Faces & Vases - Drew Genova

 I have drawn the faces & vases piece 3 times. The first time it was incredibly difficult to not see the left face - which is exactly what the article said I would have complications with. However, I wanted to show my process when developing the face, and how my brain had difficulties switching from R to L

However, in the upside down drawing - I put my headphones on and put on lo-fi music so I can concentrate. Suddenly, my brain could only see the lines of the drawing, and totally eliminated the man himself. Once I figured that out, I was able to draw him successfully. I was so proud of my work because he is fully realized. When you flip him right side up, you can see a man sitting. It was interesting to draw this way - as I deconstructed this image, and only created a line-for-line drawing, without necessarily knowing the final product.

    I love the layering of the three faces! It's visually interesting and does highlight the optical illusion/cognitive processing that goes into producing art. I think your note about "not knowing the final product" is also really interesting -- as artists I think we are sometimes torn between executing a specific concept and allowing our work to evolve naturally.

Vases, Faces, and Little Princes

                       (Pencil, 9’’ x 12’’, 163gsm) According to the assignment this week, we tried to separate our hand and eyes and used left and right brain, which was a big challenge for me. When I was drawing the vases & faces drawing, I tried to draw smooth lines, but I found that it was difficult for my brain to control my hand. Especially when I started drawing the right part, I always unconsciously wanted to change the direction of the lines. Thus, I didn’t draw the vases & faces as balanced and full in the end. The biggest challenge for me was the second drawing, I never tried to draw with a reversed direction. Social Justice Posters - Graham

 The social justice movement I decided to go with is LGBTQIA+ rights. I decided to go with this movement because I have important people in my life who are part of the community. While not being a part of the community myself, I realize the privilege I have as a cisgender male in today's society and want to use said privilege in any way possible to advocate for equal rights for all who fall under that umbrella. Also, the quote I chose was tweeted out by Gerard Way after the Orlando nightclub shooting in 2016 and he's been a large influence on my life + an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights as well. The quote is as follows, "I've always just wanted everyone to be able to be who they want to be, proudly, enthusiastically- freely." The first poster I designed is 11x17 with a black background and white coloring and Chaparral font.
